2021 Sibling Trip - Minneapolis

In August, 2021, I took all my siblings to Minneapolis to visit the Sorensons! Taran, Enoch, and I wanted to go to the Minnesota Renaissance Fair, and Mom and Dad were going on a trip to Denver with Amy and Frank Whitlatch, so all the kids came with us.

We also got to see Sydney, who was staying with Cheryl and Kyle until school started (she would be going to school in the US, but her parents lived out of the country at the time).

Here are the pictures.

August 16th

At Peavey Plaza, along Nicollet Mall

I wanted to see this plaza, it is a wonderful re-use of a dead space and is a great example of urban planning in Minneapolis. My boss told me he wanted pictures (he is a landscape architect). Not sure if I ever got them to him!

At Aunt Cheryl's house, after I accidentally ruined Enoch's beard and moustache:

Our family is nerdy and found Barnes & Noble

Taran helped Tyler get around and Oscar found mommy (Lisa's) name at a gift shop.

At a park after eating some fast food. Enoch sat at the playground and played the Nintendo Switch

Taran brought Mr. Sleepy and his axolotl. This is how I found them.

Downtown Minneapolis

We went downtown to get Enoch's senior pictures taken by Ann Noel, a Madison friend who moved to Mpls. and professional photographer.

Sitting in the dirt, for some reason.

Water feature!

At Ann and her husband's apartment. They kindly fed us and let us use their pool!

We went with the Sorensons

Uncle Kyle carried Enoch because why not?

Interesting art exhibit. There were at least 100 of these posters from the artist.

We went for ice cream after. This place had awesome flavors and even their smallest cup was huge.

So, of course, Taran got their largest

This shop also had a hose outside to wash down sticky hands, feet and tables. Very smart! And when Oscar dropped his entire cup after one bite, they replaced it for free. I can't remember their name, but Aunt Cheryl will know! I should ask her.

August 21st

Minnesota Renaissance Fair

The reason we went to Minneapolis! I had purchased tickets for myself and Enoch, but then the trip turned into a whole vacation. Taran, Calvin, and Sydney tagged along, while Willa and Oscar hung out with Cheryl, Elizabeth, Mikayla, and Tyler.

Who is this mysterious stranger? Enoch, wearing daddy's cloak! (And holding his Wild Bill's mug, a soda shop that tends to show up at festivals and fairs).

This guy was kind of a stinker. But he was a carney, so he has to bait people into giving him money somehow ;)

The point of the game was to climb a swinging rope ladder. He held onto it until you got to about the second rung and then he let go. Enoch and Sydney tried it, but neither made it.

Dog race!

Enoch cheered on the jousters

Yummy food! Taran, of course, went for the bucket o' fries.

Enoch bought a pretty silver circlet with a green gem.

Taran fell in love with a pirate hat and I got it for him.

He was fabulous.

Enoch and Taran were very interested in the living history guys, who actually show up at the Sioux Falls Ren Fair! The man with the falcon works with conservation groups, and shows birds to raise awareness of conservation and endangered bird species.

And we ended the night playing games with Cheryl and Kyle! Fun and exhausting day.

August 22nd

I had intended to go to the Renaissance Fair twice, and had purchased tickets for two days, but getting home was more important. So I gave our tickets to Cheryl, packed my siblings into the van, and drove home! We beat mommy and daddy by a few hours. I believe I went back to Brookings to go to work the next day. A fun trip, even with all the crazy and sibling arguments. We ate yummy food, saw family, and had a ton of fun!

*Random notes:
  • At the Ren. Fair, we watched a silver smith (I think that's the right title) work, and she told us how she made her jewelry. It was lovely.
  • Also at the Fair, we ran into two singers who tour the Ren. Fair circuit. They have lovely voices and I saw them at the Sioux Falls Ren. Fair earlier in 2021 and in 2022.
  • Aunt Cheryl watched Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It is such a stupid, hilarious movie.
  • Aunt Cheryl also let me use her sewing machine so I could finish making the pouch I brought with me to the Ren. Fair.
  • One of my brothers was a stinker and hit another of his siblings at Minnehaha. I was very mad. But it was okay eventually (I don't know why, but this is important for me to remember).
